Veteran Coaching Staff Leads Cub Football to Undefeated Season
Under the direction of a veteran alumni coaching staff, Loyola High School’s storied football program added another league championship to its record books.
In what was a shortened 2021 season, the Varsity football team dominated Angelus League opponents en route to a perfect 4-0 overall record and Loyola’s first outright conference title since 2000. After a 28-24 road victory in the season opener against St. Bernard (their only non-conference matchup), the Cubs left no doubt as to who the best team in the league was, defeating St. Francis (41-14), St. Paul (31-0) and Crespi (54-6) by a combined 126-20 margin—an average score of 42-7.
This year’s Varsity squad was led by second-year head coach and former CIF Player of the Year at Loyola, Drew Casani ’91. There were 12 alumni coaches that were part of the Cub Football program during this season, including varsity assistant coaches Mike Gilhooly ’88, Rick Pedroarias ’84, Christian Gascou ’93, Joseph Murray ’78, Jorge Torres ’99 and Joe Vivo ’96. Also assisting the football program were coaches PJ Pascale ’78, Steven Arellano ’79, Gifford Irvine ’82, Fred Sainz ’83, Anthony Holly ’87, Daniel Pedroarias ’15 and Christian Rector ’15.
Congratulations to all of our Cub coaches on a fantastic season!
