Chancellor Ramirez ’13 and Marko Vavic ’17 Win Gold for Team USA
A pair of Loyola Water Polo alums—Chancellor Ramirez ’13 and Marko Vavic ’17—recently claimed gold medals for Team USA at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Ramirez and Vavic were two of just 11 total players on the USA Men’s National Team roster that defeated Canada 18-6 in the title game to secure a seventh-straight Pan Am Games gold. With the victory, Team USA also punched a ticket to the 2020 Olympic Games to be held next summer in Tokyo, Japan.
The United States stormed through group play during the tournament, outscoring opponents by a 117-27 margin and finishing undefeated at 6-0. In total, Vavic recorded 10 goals throughout the tournament, including one in the gold medal match, while Ramirez added six of his own.
Ramirez was a three-time All-American at UCLA from 2013-17 and spent the last year playing professionally in Athens, Greece for A1 Ethniki, while the two-time All-American Vavic is entering his junior season this fall at USC. At Loyola, both Cubs played under head water polo coach Erik Healy.
