Alumni Update

Fr. Mario Powell, SJ ’99 Appointed President of Brooklyn Jesuit Prep School

Congratulations to Loyola alum Fr. Mario Powell, SJ ’99, who was recently appointed the sixth president of Brooklyn Jesuit Prep School in New York. Brooklyn Jesuit Prep (BJP) is a Nativity-model middle school serving low-income families located in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Before his appointment, Fr. Powell served as the director of the REACH Program at Regis High School in Manhattan, which is an educational and leadership program that prepares middle-school students from families with financial need to earn scholarships to leading high schools in New York City.

During Loyola’s inaugural Alumni Service Day back in April, several Cubs in the New York area teamed up with Mario to cook lunch for students and their families at the REACH Program. In reflecting on his new role as president, Fr. Powell stressed that “Brooklyn Jesuit Prep is precisely the kind of Jesuit, mission-based school that I want to lead, bringing the same passion and energy that marked my years at Regis to BJP. I look forward to hitting the ground running.”

Fr. Powell was ordained to the priesthood in June of 2014 at Fordham University Church in the Bronx. He graduated from Loyola High in 1999 and went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees from Boston College and St. Louis University.
