With an alumni base that is more than 16,000 strong, Loyola Cubs from far and wide have had many notable accomplishments and continue to share some exciting news. Read below for some fun info about our alums.
Col. Michael O’Hara ’82 Takes Up New Post
Col. Michael O’Hara ’82 of the US Army (Ret.) has more service on the way as he begins a new role as the U.S. Senior Defensive Representative to the Minister of Defense of Somalia, beginning on October 1, 2020.
More Cubs On the Front Line
- Capt. David A. Barrows ’92 (acting Commanding Officer; pictured right) and Capt. Duneley Rochino ’88 (acting Executive Officer; pictured left) of Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida are protecting Naval Forces from COVID-19 and ensuring mission readiness.
- Dr. Francisco Suarez ’04 has helped offset the patient loads on local emergency rooms by providing emergency dental services covering all head and neck/dental infections to facial trauma. He has covered these services for state-mandated closed dental offices and is still doing so today. Dr. Suarez says that his successes “have been ground in the teaching of being a servant leader and Man for Others first.”
Karl Kwok ’97 Elected as Fellow of ASGE
In recognition of his commitment to quality and contributions to the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy, Karl Kwok ’97 was recently elected as a Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). The honor is bestowed upon approximately five percent of high-performing gastroenterologists across the country.
Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ ’72 and Homeboy Industries Receive $2.5M Hilton Foundation Humanitarian Prize
Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ ’72 and his nonprofit Homeboy Industries were granted a $2.5M Humanitarian Award from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. The 2020 Humanitarian Prize is the world’s largest annual humanitarian award and is presented to nonprofit organizations that have made extraordinary contributions toward alleviating human suffering.
Nicolaus Jakowec ’15 Named USTFCCCA All-Academic
Former Loyola cross country runner Nicolaus Jakowec ’15 earned 2020 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors after capping his senior season at USC with a 3.61 GPA in biochemistry. The distance runner also made the 2020 Pac-12 Spring academic Honor Roll and was an All-Academic Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Scholar-Athlete.
Mass of the Holy Spirit: Thursday, Sept. 10, 2020
You and your family are invited to join Fr. Goethals, SJ ’73, Principal Kozakowski and the entire LHS community on Thursday, September 10th to celebrate the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit as we bless the new school year. The Mass will begin at 7:00 p.m. via livestream here.

Loyola Teachers Retire
A handful of longtime Loyola educators said goodbye to 1901 Venice Boulevard prior to the start of the 2020-21 school year. A full feature on these teachers will be coming soon and alumni will be able to leave thank you notes and congratulatory messages.
