Leo McElroy ’49 and “Huegel’s Law” Set for Spring Debut
McElroy, an award-winning play writer, has his recent work titled “Huegel’s Law” set for production in Sacramento’s Howe Avenue Theater in April-May of 2020. “Huegel’s Law” is a comic look at four new lawyers attempting to start their own law firm—with sometimes disastrous results. Additionally, two of his newer plays, “Curtain Call — The Trial of John Wilkes Booth” and another legal drama “Noah’s Arc” are currently under active consideration for production.
Kevin Harbour ’75 Named President of BizFed Institute
The LA County Business Federation named Harbour the President of BizFed Institute in the fall. The following quote and more can be found in this story by the LA Sentinel: “As he grew, his appreciation for education also grew. He began to play football at Loyola High School and was known for his talent as an athlete, but also his will to learn…”
“That education has taken me throughout my life; I wouldn’t do it any differently,” he says, explaining how he has been blessed with life-long friends and business partners from his years at Loyola High.”
Rich Dion ’87 Leads California-Based Nonprofit
Dion—an alum who has spent the last 25 years abroad in Europe and Central Asia with the UN, Shell and other organizations working in the fields of governance, energy, human rights and culture—is currently leading the Bridge Museum, a California-based nonprofit taking a two-pronged approach of promoting STEAM disciplines and reducing the country’s polarization. Wedding the hard sciences (architecture and engineering) and the soft sciences (empathy and dialogue), the Museum will launch a six-month, hands-on exhibition later this year in Oakland’s Jack London Square to help visitors understand the “other.” (www.bridgemuseum.org)
Francisco Paredes ’94 Honored by Chief Probation Officers of California
Paredes was selected to receive the 2019 CPOC Award of Excellence at the annual CPOC Awards Luncheon last month in Napa Valley. The award is given to a probation employee that has made significant contributions that have had statewide or far-reaching impacts on probation.
CPOC is an association of Chief Probation Officers from each of the 58 counties of California. This body advises the state’s lawmakers to create legislation and policies that are aligned with the goals and missions of the probation departments throughout California.
Ryan Herbert ’00 Nominated for 2019 CFO Award
Herbert, former Chief Operating Officer and Principal of Thorofare Capital, Inc., was nominated at the annual Los Angeles Business Journal CFO Awards, which recognizes LA County finance professionals for their ongoing efforts and contributions to their organizations. Thorofare Capital, Inc. is based in the Financial District in downtown Los Angeles and is a commercial real estate loan origination and servicing company.
Water Polo Alumni Earn All-American Honors
Three former Cub Water Polo players—Mac Carey ’16 (Santa Clara), Armen Deirmenjian ’16 (Brown) and Sean Thomas ’15 (Pepperdine)—earned All-American honorable mention status by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches following the conclusion of the 2019 season.
Trevor Homstad ’16 Leads Swarthmore to NCAA Sweet 16
Loyola Soccer alum Trevor Homstad ’16 helped the Garnet reach the NCAA Sweet 16 round in one of the school’s most successful campaigns ever. The senior midfielder/defender closed out his career as an All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team pick after also earning All-Centennial Conference Second Team accolades.
Marko Vavic ’17 Represents Team USA in Kuwait at Junior World Championships
Loyola Water Polo alum Marko Vavic ’17 helped the USA Men take seventh place at the 2019 FINA Junior World Championships in Kuwait City, Kuwait. In the final game of the tournament, Vavic scored five goals to lead USA over Japan, 19-14.
Alumni Weekend: German-style
While we had our own Alumni Weekend here in Los Angeles, a quartet of Cubs from the class of 2016—Paolo Secci, Jack Wilson, Robbie Lowe and Kevin Fraher—celebrated their own version of #LoyolaAlumniWeekend in Deutschland! See the photo they sent from Germany below.
